Reference
We list two Model Y pack types: LFP and the nickel-based 2170 pack in Long Range and Performance cars. Standard Range and base RWD cars built in Shanghai or Berlin have LFP, with CATL cells (Shanghai-built) or BYD cells (Berlin-built from May 2023). The Austin Standard Range AWD has a nickel 4680 pack, which has no page yet. Tell them apart by the trim, the factory and the label on the pack, not the kWh figure.
Standard Range / RWD
The Tesla Model Y LFP battery is the pack in Standard Range and base RWD cars built in Shanghai or Berlin. It comes with cells from two different suppliers: CATL in Shanghai-built cars and BYD (Blade) in Berlin-built RWD cars from May 2023, so check where the car was built.
Long Range / Performance
The Tesla Model Y Long Range and Performance battery is a non-structural pack of nickel-based 2170 cylindrical cells: Panasonic cells in Fremont-built cars and LG Energy Solution NCM cells in Shanghai- and Berlin-built cars.
Each fact is confirmed by two independent sources: Tesla's SEC filings, emergency response guide and VIN filings (one source), plus ADAC, InsideEVs, autoevolution, electrive, CarNewsChina, CleanTechnica, Electrek, CnEVPost and Autocar. Tesla publishes no Model Y capacities, so we give none. Facts we could not confirm twice are left out. Checked .Part numbers and sources are on each size's page.
Questions
Still unsure which pack is right? A specialist can check fitment with you.
Talk to a specialistGo by the trim and the factory. Standard Range and base RWD cars built in Shanghai or Berlin have LFP. The Austin Standard Range AWD has a nickel 4680 pack. Long Range and Performance cars have the nickel 2170 pack. On a US car the VIN shows the factory: it starts 5YJ up to the 2021 model year and 7SA from 2022, and its eleventh character is F for Fremont or A for Austin. For UK and EU cars, go by the trim and the label on the pack.
Only as a whole unit. Austin-built Model Ys delivered from April 2022 were the first with Tesla's 4680 structural pack, first sold as the Standard Range AWD with an EPA range of 279 miles. The pack is removed and replaced as one unit, with the seats attached. Its cells are glued in with no modules, so it cannot realistically be repaired cell by cell. Whether it fits a car built with a 2170 pack is not confirmed, so check the label on the pack.
Tesla Model Y packs with a fixed price on ReBattery are listed at £3,125 right now. The price depends on condition and measured health, and some sellers take offers instead. Fitting by an EV garage costs extra.
