Reference
Tesla named each Model S by the pack capacity it sold: 60, 70, 75, 85, 90 or 100 kWh. All use Panasonic 18650 cells, and the packs built up to 2020 are liquid cooled. The badge does not always give the hardware: a 2016-on Model S 60, or a 70 with the updated styling, has a 75 kWh pack limited in software, and a 2021-on car has a different pack from the older 100 kWh one. Check the year as well as the badge.
Two packs: 2013 to 2015, and from 2016
Two packs carry the Tesla Model S 60 badge: a real 60 kWh pack in 2013 to 2015 cars, and a 75 kWh pack limited to 60 kWh in software in Model S 60 and 60D cars from 2016. Both use Panasonic 18650 cells and liquid cooling.

Two packs: before and after the April 2016 facelift
Two packs carry the Tesla Model S 70 badge: a real 70 kWh pack, built from 2015 until April 2016, and a 75 kWh pack limited to 70 kWh in software in cars with the updated styling. Both use Panasonic 18650 cells and liquid cooling.

From April 2016
The Tesla Model S 75 kWh battery is the pack in the Model S 75 and 75D, and also in 2016-on Model S 60 and 70 cars, where Tesla limited it in software. It uses Panasonic 18650 cells and liquid cooling.
Built into
Model years 2013 to 2016
The Tesla Model S 85 kWh battery is the pack in the Model S 85, P85, 85D and P85D from 2013 to 2016: Panasonic 18650 cells in a liquid-cooled pack, replaced by the 90 kWh pack from 2015.
Built into
From 2015, silicon in the anode
The Tesla Model S 90 kWh battery replaced the 85 kWh pack in 2015 and sits in the Model S 90, 90D and P90D: Panasonic 18650 cells with silicon added to the graphite anode, in a liquid-cooled pack.

Two packs: 100D and P100D, and 2021-on
Two packs are listed as Tesla Model S 100 kWh: the 16-module pack of 8,256 Panasonic 18650 cells in the 100D and P100D from 2016, and a different five-module pack in 2021-on Long Range and Plaid cars. The 16-module pack is liquid cooled.

Each fact is confirmed by two independent sources: Tesla's annual report, emergency response guides and VIN filings (one source), US EPA and NHTSA records, and Electrek, Teslarati, InsideEVs, Green Car Reports, Road & Track, Jalopnik, Charged EVs and The Driven. Facts we could not confirm twice are left out. Checked .Part numbers and sources are on each size's page.
Questions
Still unsure which pack is right? A specialist can check fitment with you.
Talk to a specialistRead the badge and check the model year. US Model S names from 2013 to 2019 carry the kWh Tesla sold, such as 85D or P90D; later names such as Long Range and Performance do not. Listings at 60, 70 and 100 kWh each cover two packs, and the year decides which. On a 2014 or 2015 Model S, the seventh VIN character gives the battery class, and S means Standard. From 2016 the VIN does not identify the pack, so check the label on the pack.
If it was built after the April 2016 facelift, yes. Tesla built those cars with a 75 kWh pack and limited it to 70 kWh in software. The same goes for a Model S 60 or 60D from 2016. Tesla can unlock the rest over the air, and the badge then changes. A Model S 70 built before the facelift, or a 60 from 2013 to 2015, has a smaller pack.
Not confirmed. Tesla has fitted larger packs to older cars of the same model, and a teardown found the 100 kWh pack needs firmware and configuration changes to fit. No two sources confirm that a Model S pack works in a Model X, or the reverse. Ask the seller which car the pack came from and check with a Tesla-qualified specialist.
Tesla Model S packs with a fixed price on ReBattery are listed from €2,295 (85 kWh) to €2,430 (90 kWh) right now. The price depends on condition and measured health, and some sellers take offers instead. Fitting by an EV garage costs extra.
