Reference
We list three BMW i3 packs, which BMW names by cell capacity: 60 Ah (22 kWh), 94 Ah (33 kWh) and 120 Ah (42 kWh). The i3s and the range extender (REx) cars use the same packs. All three have the same outer size.
60 Ah
The BMW i3 60 Ah battery, sold as 22 kWh, has 96 Samsung SDI NCM cells in eight twelve-cell modules wired in series, 18.8 kWh usable, with refrigerant cooling.

94 Ah
The BMW i3 94 Ah battery, sold as 33 kWh, has 96 Samsung SDI NCM cells in eight twelve-cell modules, 27.2 kWh usable, in the same outer size as the 60 Ah pack.

120 Ah
The BMW i3 120 Ah battery, sold as 42 kWh, holds 42.2 kWh gross and 37.9 kWh usable in 96 NCM cells in eight twelve-cell modules, in the same outer size as the earlier i3 packs.

Each fact is confirmed by two independent sources: BMW press releases and specifications (one source), plus Idaho National Laboratory tests, ADAC, InsideEVs, electrive, Charged EVs, CleanTechnica and university research. Facts we could not confirm twice are left out. Checked .Part numbers and sources are on each size's page.
Questions
Still unsure which pack is right? A specialist can check fitment with you.
Talk to a specialistCheck the build date. The 60 Ah pack was fitted from 2013 to 2017, the 94 Ah from 2016 to 2018 and the 120 Ah from November 2018. A European car from 2016 or 2017 can have either the 60 or the 94 Ah pack, so check the label. In the US, model years 2014 to 2016 have the 60 Ah pack, 2017 to 2018 the 94 Ah and 2019 to 2021 the 120 Ah. An i3s always has the 94 or 120 Ah pack.
It is the same size: BMW kept the pack's outer dimensions from the 60 Ah to the 120 Ah. BMW's only official upgrade was from 60 Ah to 94 Ah, in selected markets and not in the US. Whether a newer pack needs coding to work in an older car is not confirmed, so ask a BMW specialist before you buy.
No. In each generation the range extender (REx) car uses the same pack as the electric-only i3. The 120 Ah REx was sold in the US and other export markets, not in Europe.
No. The MINI Cooper SE has its own 32.6 kWh pack of 12 modules in a T shape. Every i3 pack has eight modules.
No. Every i3 pack is eight modules of twelve cells, so one module holds about an eighth of the pack's capacity.
BMW i3 packs with a fixed price on ReBattery are listed from £2,000 (42 kWh) to £3,330 (33 kWh) right now. The price depends on condition and measured health, and some sellers take offers instead. Fitting by an EV garage costs extra.
