Compare battery recycling quotes only after they use the same battery quantity, weight, chemistry, condition, collection point, packaging assumption and documentation scope. Add every payment and cost, then check adjustments, rejected-load terms and payment timing.

Illustrative example: Recycler A offers to pay £500. Recycler B charges £100. The first quote looks £600 better until you discover that Recycler A expects a packaged battery delivered to its site, while Recycler B includes collection and the final treatment record.
The headline is not the result. Put both quotes on the same basis before choosing.
The number to compare
Use one simple calculation:
Net outcome = payments received − collection − packaging − testing or discharge − treatment fees − adjustments − internal handling cost
Keep VAT and recoverable tax separate so a tax-inclusive quote does not appear cheaper or more valuable than a tax-exclusive quote. Record payment timing as well. £500 due after final settlement is not identical to £500 paid on collection.
Normalise these ten fields

If one quote omits a field, mark it unknown. Do not silently treat the missing cost as zero.
Worked example: the result changes after collection costs
This example uses invented figures to demonstrate the method. It does not represent a ReBattery quote or a UK market benchmark.
The same intact battery is at the same collection site. Both recyclers have confirmed acceptance subject to the stated conditions.

Recycler A remains £50 better on these assumptions, not £600 better. If its collection cost rises by more than £50, Recycler B becomes the lower-cost option.
The decision could change again if one quote has a broad rejection clause, slower settlement or a weaker evidence return. Those terms belong beside the arithmetic.

Keep the source quote beside the normalised version. The worksheet explains the decision; it should not erase the original terms.
Compare the downside, not only the expected case
Run the quote through three cases.
Expected
The battery matches the description, weight falls inside the expected range and collection runs as planned.
Adjustment
The verified weight differs, packaging needs work or the receiving site applies a stated chemistry or contamination adjustment.
Rejection
The load does not match the pre-acceptance information, condition has changed or the site cannot accept it. Record who pays for waiting, return transport, storage and corrective packaging.
The Environment Agency's appropriate-measures guidance expects permitted facilities to obtain written pre-acceptance information, verify incoming waste and manage non-conforming loads. A quote that changes after inspection is not automatically improper. The useful question is whether the original terms explain how and why it can change.
Check the counterparty and scope
A low price from the wrong destination is not a saving.
Before accepting:
- verify the legal entity and receiving site in the relevant environmental registers;
- confirm that its permission and written acceptance criteria cover the chemistry, form and condition;
- verify the carrier or broker where applicable;
- confirm the downstream route and evidence you receive;
- keep the quoted battery description with the movement and outcome records.
Register presence does not prove that a company can accept every battery. Check the current scope and the specific site.
When the recommendation changes
- A higher material payment can win when the battery is already packaged, transport is short and adjustments are narrow.
- A managed quote can win when collection, compliant packaging, coordination and final records would otherwise consume the payment.
- A technically cheaper quote can lose when its acceptance conditions make rejection likely.
- A recycling quote can be the wrong comparison when a credible repair, resale or reuse buyer exists and the battery is not already committed to a waste route.
Price is only one part of the route. Compare the whole transaction.
Bottom line
Write every quote on the same battery, service and evidence basis. Calculate the expected and downside outcomes. Then choose the capable counterparty whose complete terms produce the best defensible result.
Review note: Recheck facility, waste and dangerous-goods guidance at least every six months and whenever the battery condition, destination or territory changes.
